HYDRATION: both inside and outside! First up - DRINK. YOUR. WATER! Aim for 2L every day. Your skin is around 60% water, so keeping it hydrated helps it stay supple, plump and resilient. If it becomes dehydrated, the cells shrink and become dry and flaky so skin become more prone to those pesky wrinkles and fine lines. These shrunken, dry cells don't reflect light as well so skin looks flat, dull and unhealthy. Conversely, hydrated skin looks healthier, smoother, softer and more glowier (that's totally a word)

When talking about skin, hydration means attracting moisture INTO the skin, not just on top. Look for ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid or Sodium Hyaluronate. This amazing hydrator can hold up to 1,000x its own weight in water, meaning it’ll draw water into every layer of the skin and hold it there, plus it provides antioxidant defense. Hydrating mists are also perfect for a refreshing spritz on the go so you can keep that skin hydrated and healthy. You'll also need to moisturise - which isn't actually the same thing as hydrating your skin!! This refers to locking in that hydration you've just applied and protecting the skin barrier.

EXFOLIATION: Our skin cells shed naturally, but this process slows down as we age, meaning the dead cells build up on the surface resulting in a dull complexion. Exfoliation is the process of removing the skin’s outer layer of dead cells to reveal the newer, plumper cells underneath. This smooths the skin's surface, making it clearer and more reflective. Depending on personal preference, use either a physical exfoliant, like a gentle face scrub, or a chemical exfoliation, such as a face peel several times per week after cleansing and toning.

RETINOL: As mentioned above, the skin cell renewal process slows down as we age. When used on your skin correctly, retinoids (a family of compounds derived from Vitamin A) can speed up skin cell turnover to reveal younger, plumper skin cells, boost collagen production, and unblock pores. Retinol has great anti-inflammatory power, which is why it's as effective at treating wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Using retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so ALWAYS wear SPF when using retinol.

SPF: Prevention is always better than cure. Always, ALWAYS wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30+, even in winter and even if you’re indoors all day (those sneaky buggers can get through windows!). Both UVA and UVB rays play a role in causing skin cancers and are a major cause of premature ageing due to the damage they cause to your skin. Using a tinted moisturiser or foundation that does double duty as a sunscreen is a win but I personally always use sunscreen under tinted moisturiser/foundation just to be sure.

BRIGHTENING INGREDIENTS: Brightening - not to be confused with lightening - is all about increasing the radiance and vibrancy of skin. In topical skincare treatments like serums and moisturizers, look on the packaging for terms such as “brightening” and “skin tone-evening,” and ingredients like vitamin C - an antioxidant that brightens skin by blocking an enzyme that produces pigment.

ADD A LUMINESCENT HIGHLIGHTER TO YOUR MOISTURISER: if you can’t make it, fake it! There are some beautiful cream and powder highlighters available on the market that serve the exact purpose of creating that dewy glow! I personally put half a pump of a highlighter into my tinted moisturiser every day to get that "lit from within" look!
